01. Surface Inspection and Treatment

When preparing to lay rock slabs on surfaces commonly found in the construction industry, such as concrete, cement-based, and anhydrous gypsum plastering, it is essential to ensure the surface is suitable for the installation. Whether you are installing a marble top bedroom furniture set or placing rock slabs in a commercial space, the surface must meet the following conditions:

  1. The surface must be firm and crack-free. All cracks in the leveling layer must be sealed with epoxy resin products.
  2. Curing and dimensional stability. This ensures that beautiful pieces like white marble bedroom furniture remain level and stable.
  3. Strong and strong enough to withstand foreseeable loads and the scope of use.
  4. Dry surface. Dryness must be tested according to the method established for each type.
  5. Clean and free of other loose dust, grease, oil stains, wax, paint, demoulding compounds, and other materials that are not conducive to bonding. If there is an oil stain, it should be brushed and rinsed with a 10% caustic soda aqueous solution.
  6. The base surface is flat (recommended thickness deviation ±3mm). If the flatness of the base surface is not within the deviation range, the base surface must be leveled with a suitable leveling mortar before installing the tiles.

02. Floor Leveling Treatment

1. (Thin Plate) Manual Straight-Line Cutting Construction: Place the cutting guide along the line to be cut on the rock slabs and fix it with a suction cup. Make a small incision of 1 cm–2 cm from the inside to the outside of the rock slabs. Then complete the cutting from one end to the other, ensuring that the same pressure is applied to the tool during the entire cutting process. Use a tile cutter to cut both ends of the rock slabs along the cutting line.

2. Breaking and Grinding: Slightly break the rock slabs in half along the cutting line until the two pieces break. It is generally recommended that two people on the left and right perform this operation to prevent the rock slabs from collapsing, breaking, and falling. The edge after cutting becomes sharp or jagged. It is recommended to use a diamond pad or grinding disc to clean and polish the edges of the rock slabs.

3. (Thick Plate) Electric Straight-Line Cutting Construction: For thick plate rock slabs (10–15 mm) or special position cuts, it is recommended to use an electric cutter. Follow the cutting guide and use a disc cutter for a 90° vertical cut or a 45° chamfer cut. This method can be used for the cutting or partial cutting of rock slabs.

03. Preparation for Paving the Rock Slab

  1. Handling and Processing of the Rock Slab:

03 Preparation for Paving the Rock Slabs
  • Unpack the rock slab from the package. Before handling and moving it, use a wet sponge to clean the suction cup contact surface of the tile to obtain better suction.
  • Use a rock slab handling lifting bar for specifications above 900×1800mm. The handling lifting bar is adjusted according to the length of the rock slab, and the lifting bar is used with a suction cup. If the brick has been cut or the part is fragile, it is recommended to add more auxiliary beams to reduce the bending or distortion of the product.
  • Depending on the finishing material, there are two types of suction cups: the traditional type and the built-in pump. The latter type is safer, provides better grip, and the pump can be used to maintain the vacuum again even after a period of time. Always ensure that a good vacuum state is generated between the device and the tile surface.
  • All suction cups ensure that the air is completely exhausted and the red line of the built-in pump is in the pump, and then you can start lifting. This process must be extra careful, especially to avoid breakage or damage of the corners of the stone slab during transportation.
  1. Stone rock slab processing:
  • Simple processing, such as cutting and opening of stone slabs, can be carried out on the construction site, but professional construction operation platforms and tools are required before processing.

Steps for Stone Slab Processing:

Step 1: Processing Platform Construction

Step 2: Cutting and Opening Marking

  • Place the stone slab to be cut on the construction platform, and then mark the stone slab according to the requirements of the design drawings.

Step 3: Cutting Methods

A1. Use a tile cutter to cut both ends of the tile along the cutting line.

A2. Breaking and Grinding: Slightly break the rock slabs in half along the cutting line until the two pieces break. It is generally recommended that two people on the left and right perform this operation to prevent the cutting from collapsing, breaking, and falling. The edge after cutting becomes sharp or jagged. It is recommended to use a diamond pad or grinding disc to clean and polish the edges of the rock slabs.

Step 4: Electric Hole Construction

  • Circular Holes: Use a dry or wet diamond cutter to drill holes along the marked hole position. The cutting head starts drilling at a certain angle for more accurate cutting. If wet cutting is used, keep the cutting area wet.
  • Rectangular Holes: Use a drill and disc cutter along the marked hole position. First, drill a circular hole in each corner of the rectangle, then use the disc cutter to cut straight lines between each hole.

04. Wet-Paving of Rock Slabs

Step 1: Preparation of Tile Adhesive

  • Read the instructions on the back of the tile adhesive bag, especially the mixing ratio of water and ash. After mixing, use an electric stirrer to stir evenly. Use a mortar knife to take a part, and if the tile adhesive does not fall down, it is completely mixed and ready for application on the wall and brick surface.

Step 2: Scraper Application

  • Use a scraper with inclined notches (at least 10 mm spacing) to apply the adhesive to the base surface evenly. Use a scraper with smaller teeth (square teeth with a spacing of at least 3–4 mm) to apply the adhesive on the back of the tile, ensuring 100% full coating.

Step 3: Application Method

  • Apply the adhesive in a straight line parallel to the short side of the tile, not in a circular way, to reduce air trapped during pasting. Apply the adhesive to the base surface on the back of the tile in the same direction (parallel to the short side of the tile).

Step 4: Floor Paving Construction

  • After applying tile adhesive on the ground and the back of the rock slab, use the rock slab lifting bar to lift the rock slab to the paving area, adjust the position, and slowly bond it to the ground. Move and adjust the paving position when it is not fully adsorbed. Install the leveller on the edge of the rock slab.

Step 5: Use of Vibrator and Rock Slab Beater

  • To ensure that the tile is completely bonded to the base surface and all the air is squeezed out, use a vibrator or anti-rebound rubber sheet to smooth the tile surface. Press from the middle of the tile to the surrounding area, parallel to the short side, to ensure air is squeezed out.

Step 6: Cleaning and Beautifying the Surface of the Rock Slab

  • The brick joints between the rock slabs must be at least 2 mm wide. Increase the width of the brick joints according to the size and type of the rock slab, the area of use (wall and floor, indoor and outdoor tile installation), and the expected stress during use.

Step 7: Finished Product Protection

  • To prevent subsequent construction from scratching the rock slab, protect the ground with a protective film (a simpler option is to use a rock slab carton). Protect wall corners with a protective cover. Walking and washing are prohibited within 24 hours after construction completion.
  • During the operation of laying rock slabs, protect installed door frames, pipes, etc., by nailing protective iron sheets on door frames and using narrow vehicles for ash transport.
  • Do not store construction supplies or perform cutting, painting, etc., on newly laid or unprotected rock slabs.
